This time of year brings remembrances that are both bittersweet and joyful. On Friday afternoon, one particular remembrance unfolded at Mad River Park as girls youth soccer players convened for what's become an annual tradition honoring the memory of Harwood student-athlete Mary Harris. 

Eighty-seven runners completed Saturday’s Green Mountain Mile ahead of the Not Quite Independence Day parade on Main Street in Waterbury.

Harwood’s No. 2 Highlanders will face No. 1 Hartford today in the Division II Boys Lacrosse championship game at Norwich University at 4:30 p.m.

More than 100 local girls soccer players turned out under bright sunshine at Mad River Park in Waitsfield last Sunday for what’s become an annual tradition to train with Harwood Union High School players and honor the memory of a former HU varsity team member.

Basketball season is just around the corner and registration is open for Harwood Youth Basketball league for players in grades 1-6. 

Harwood Union High School fall sports launched this past week with the usual pre-season meeting for student-athletes, parents and coaches. The school’s new athletics and activities director began with a new 5.5-min. video from the Vermont Principals Association emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and modeling positive behavior – by adults.

Like those random red and orange leaves people find and try to ignore this time of year, a sign of fall around the corner is sign-ups for fall youth soccer.

Harwood Union High School recently announced the hiring of Lynn Sobczyk as its new Girls Varsity Soccer coach.

Some local heavy lifters put their skills, strength and training to the test at The Forge Gym in Waterbury Center last weekend for a powerlifting competition that set multiple new records. 

It may be school vacation for Harwood and other Vermont school districts, but some student-athletes aren’t getting a break as winter sports playoffs and championship meets and races roll on this week. First up is HU Girls Basketball in the Division II semifinal round at the Barre Auditorium on Monday night.

Girls and Boys Basketball teams have played their whole schedule on the road this year but that won’t dampen the enthusiasm on Wednesday for the teams’ back-to-back senior night games at the Barre Municipal Auditorium. 

Harwood this week welcomes a familiar face back on staff for the remainder of the school year as Sue Duprat steps into the role of interim athletics and activities director. 

Several dozen youngsters turned out at the Ice Center for a Youth Hockey Day organized by the Harwood Girls Varsity Hockey team last week.
