July 8, 2023 | By Lisa Scagliotti

Harwood Union High School recently announced the hiring of Lynn Sobczyk as its new Girls Varsity Soccer coach.

Sobczyk succeeds longtime coach Mike Vasseur who announced in March that he would not be returning this fall. Vasseur coached girls varsity soccer and hockey for more than 30 seasons.

Currently a head coach in the Vermont Olympic Development Program for  soccer, Sobczyk also is with the Capital Soccer Club as a goalkeeping coach and assistant coach.

She previously coached at the collegiate level as an Assistant Women's Soccer coach at both Norwich University and Middlebury College and coached junior varsity girls soccer at Burlington High School. Sobczyk played goalkeeper in college playing at both Mercy College and SUNY Cortland.

“Harwood Girls Soccer has been a strong, solid program, going deep into the playoffs each season,” noted Interim Harwood Athletic Director Sue Duprat in announcing the hire.

Harwood in 2022 made it to the Division II quarterfinal round where it lost to Mt. Abe. In 2021 and 2020, Harwood played to the semi-finals, getting eliminated by Rice and U-32 respectively. In 2019, Harwood played for the D-II title but fell to Rice. Harwood in 2010 took home the division trophy, defeating Milton.

“We are thrilled to have someone with Lynn's experience, enthusiasm for girls’ and women's soccer, and passion for teaching the game, lead our team and move us forward in the future,” Duprat said.
