Fall is officially here and that means leaf peepers of all varieties will be in Vermont soon. In Waterbury and Duxbury, that means the Leaf Peepers Half Marathon and 5K is fast approaching. The annual foot race is set for Sunday, Oct. 1.

Harwood runners have been busy this summer doing what they love. We’ve received some highlights this past week about competitions near, far, and really far away where local student-athletes took part.

Registration is now open for the Mad River Valley Soccer Association’s boys and girls spring soccer program. 

RICHMOND–—The annual Cochran’s Ski and Ride Sale is back indoors this year on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6, at Camels Hump Middle School in Richmond. 

Basketball season is right around the corner and registration for Harwood Youth Basketball is open now until Oct. 18. 

This Tuesday, Oct. 11,  after school at Mad River Park in Waitsfield, Harwood Girls Soccer hosts its annual Mary Harris Youth Soccer Day from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Waterbury Center’s Kyle Streeter was among three first-time champions crowned at Thunder Road last week.

The Central Vermont Runner's Leaf Peepers Half Marathon and 5K is set for Oct. 2 in Waterbury and registration is open through 5 p.m. on Sept. 30.

Zenbarn’s summer soccer team is having a barnburner season, advancing to the final game set for Sunday at 10 a.m. at Dac Rowe Park in downtown Waterbury. 

Harwood Youth Hockey Association will host a Corn Hole Tournament and fundraiser for the local youth program from noon to 5 p.m. on July 30 at Farr's Field on Rt. 2 in Waterbury. 

Longtime Harwood Union High School cross country, Nordic skiing and track coach John Kerrigan and his son Ryan, a former UVM Nordic skier and ultra runner, continue their involvement with the relatively new sport of sky running as they coach the USA Youth Skyrunning team as it competes in Italy this month with races in Arinsal, Andorra, on July 22 and 24.

The 24th Annual Mutt Strutt was held on Sunday, April 24, at Little River State Park in Waterbury. 

Harwood Boys and Girls Varsity Hockey is bringing back the Annual Community Awareness Games Feb. 12 and 19. 

Waterbury’s Ava Thurston for the second time has been named the top girls high school cross country runner in the Gatorade Player of the Year program for 2021-22.

Racing season isn’t over for Waterbury Center’s Tanner Woodard who heads to South Carolina for the 12th annual New Year’s Bash at Dillon Motor Speedway Jan. 7-9.

Josh Olney of Waterbury Center was recently honored by the New England Professional Golfers Association with two awards. 

Harwood Girls XC wrapped up the 2021 fall season with an impressive performance at the elite New England XC Championships held on the muddy 5K trails at Thetford Academy last weekend.
