No one could have predicted the timing. Months ago staff at The Children’s Early Learning Space childcare and preschool in Duxbury began brainstorming to rename their center. The new name went live last week just as the Winooski River spilled over its banks sending floodwaters literally right up to the building’s back door.

With areas of Waterbury village inundated with flood waters, residents in Muck boots and rain gear ventured about to survey the flooding on Tuesday. Nearby, at what is meant to be the base of operations for the state’s emergency response, the Vermont Department of Public Safety Headquarters was closed, with the Winooski River surging high behind the State Office Complex.

The state of Vermont continues preparations for severe storms and significant flooding Sunday night into Monday. The National Weather Service says excessive runoff from powerful storms may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, etc. Gov. Phil Scott has declared a State of Emergency ahead of the storm.
