A dozen Holsteins moved back to their barn from their summer pasture last week at the Davis Farm on Kneeland Flats Road in Waterbury Center.

Another three heifers that spent the summer greeting visitors at the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory were to join the herd this week, according to Maureen Davis. The animals will remain in the barn through the winter along with another 13 calves.

The farm has transitioned from its longtime dairy operation to raising cattle for beef, Davis said, explaining that the shift has been more economical and a way to remain farming.

“It’s a whole new territory for us without milkers. I miss it terribly, but it was time. Small dairy farms are hard to keep going and I’m just pleased we stuck it out as long as we did,” Davis said.
