Duxbury’s Green Up Day was successful in that 49 volunteers covered all nine main roads plus the Camel’s Hump State Park trailhead and parking lots.

Thirteen children accompanied their parents in cleaning up -- a great way to start youngsters early on environmental consciousness. Although volunteers reported finding less than in past years, all totaled they collected 3.12 tons of trash: 1.41 tons of trash and tires weighing 1.71 tons.

Most noteworthy was a smashed kayak that had been wedged behind a log and other woody debris under a railroad bridge in the Ridley Brook. The challenging feat of retrieving it was accomplished in two and a half hours by a millennial and a senior citizen.

My co-coordinator this year, Maria Steyaart, and I appreciate the assistance of Town Clerk Maureen Harvey and the Duxbury Highway Department. We thank the volunteers who participated either before or on May 30, which turned out to be a glorious spring day for Green Up.
