The Edward Farrar Utility District commissioners voted unanimously this week to appoint Mark Alberghini to fill the vacancy left by the sudden passing of Commissioner Lawrence “Lefty” Sayah on October 30.

At the board’s regular meeting on Wednesday, Chair P. Howard “Skip” Flanders said that Alberghini volunteered to complete Sayah’s one-year term “out of respect for Lefty.”

Alberghini previously served for nearly two decades as a water and sewer commissioner for the Village of Waterbury from 1995 to 2014. The village annual report for 2013 notes that Alberghini was not running for re-election in 2014 after 19 years on the commission. Alberghini initially was appointed to that body following the death of prior member Bob O’Brien, according to the report.

Sayah served 27 years as an elected official in Waterbury including as a village trustee and most recently as a utility district commissioner since the district was formed in 2018. His funeral will be held on Oct. 19 at St. Leo’s Hall.

Alberghini’s appointment runs until EFUD’s 2024 annual meeting. Voters in the utility district will elect a candidate for the one-year term on the second Wednesday in May.
