The Mad River Valley Libraries are hosting a day of free, celebratory Juneteenth events for all ages on Saturday, June 15. The nation’s newest federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when the last group of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, received the news that they were emancipated by executive decree.

The celebration kicks off with a special storytime at the Moretown Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m. Geared for children up to age 5 with their caregivers and siblings, the storytime will include Juneteenth-themed picture books and crafts.

For teens and adults, The Freedom Dreaming Creation workshop takes place at the Joslin Memorial Library park in Waitsfield from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Inspired by the book “Freedom Dreams, The Black Radical Imagination” by Robin D.G. Kelley, the Freedom Dreaming Creation workshop explores the idea of freedom through conversation, activity, and artistic creation. The workshop is led by Interdisciplinary artivist, educator, and Warren resident janet e. dandridge. The workshop is best suited for ages 14 and up, however, families with children as young as 8 may participate together.

At 6 p.m., the Warren Library will host a discussion of the book “On Juneteenth,” by Dr. Annette Gordon-Reed. Part history and part memoir, “On Juneteenth” demonstrates the significance of the holiday to the author and to the nation. Copies are available to check out and read in advance.

To help organizers plan for attendance, registration is appreciated for these programs.

Stowe Free Library 2024 Scavenger Hunt

Attention, mystery enthusiasts and curious explorers: Stowe is looking to become your playground with the Stowe Free Library's Community Scavenger Hunt now underway for the summer and early fall, running until Oct. 14.

Scavenger Hunt maps are free and available at the Stowe Free Library, at 90 Pond St. They will lead participants through the town's winding streets and hidden corners, following a trail of clues that incorporate local history and culture.

By collecting stickers along the way, hunters can win prizes from temporary tattoos to weekly giveaways from local businesses. The grand prize is a two-night stay at a Stowe hotel.

Stop by the library for a kit to pursue the adventure. The Scavenger Hunt is free and appropriate for all ages. Sponsored by the Friends of the Stowe Free Library.
