Waterbury Recreation springs into the new season

Spring is making its arrival and Waterbury Recreation has a new schedule with ongoing programs and special events booked through April. Other signups are open for youth programs later in the year.

Programs are listed online on the department website with details and registration forms. 

Sunday Mornings – Swim Lessons

Waterbury Recreation has partnered with Bolton Valley Resort for swim lessons for children ages 6 months to 12 years old. They cover everything from being comfortable in water, basics of swimming, and different swim strokes.  

Fees: $80 for residents, $100 for non-residents for 4-week mini sessions. 

Location: Bolton Valley Resort, Sports Center 

March 15 & April 5: Pizza and Movie Nights

Pizza and Movie Night is an evening hangout, dinner, and a movie at the Recreation Building. We gather together to chow on some cheese and pepperoni pizza then settle in to watch a movie. This is a chance to sign up your kiddo and then have a parent/guardian date at a restaurant in town. For ages 5 and up.

March 15 will feature the movie “Brave” and “Despicable Me” is showing on April 5, with  both events starting at 6:15 p.m.
Cost: $20 for residents, $25 for non-residents.

March 21: Clothes Mending Workshop

Attend and learn mending techniques on Thursday, March 21, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Bring your own clothing item with worn fabric or holes. Together, we’ll patch the clothing with the “mend it” mentality. Led by Waterbury Recreation Director Katarina Lisaius. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
Minimum class size is 5 people. If there are not enough registrations the week before March 21, those who are registered will be notified. 

Cost: $10

April 6: Pinhole Projector Workshop 

Learn to make a pinhole projector to safely view the total solar eclipse taking place on April 8. Participants will make, learn to use, and take home their pinhole projector. 

Class is recommended for ages 8 and up, no child younger than 5 years old. Class will be held on Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m.
Cost: $10

April 20: Canvas and Cookies Fundraiser 

Waterbury Recreation has partnered with Enchanted Paintbrush for a family-friendly paint night to benefit the Waterbury Recreation Summer Camp. Participants will be explore their creativity on canvas while enjoying some delicious cookies. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

Two classes scheduled for Saturday, April 6, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Cost: $35

Afterschool, school vacation camps, and in-service days:

Waterbury Recreation is a licensed-exempted recreational program for children grades K-6. Its focus is a variety of fun, enriching, and engaging activities such as sports, group games, field trips, and more. 

Groups spend as much time outside as the weather allows with fun indoor activities planned during poor weather and dark evenings. 

The Afterschool program runs from the end of the school day to 6 p.m. almost every school day, with the exception of closure dates listed on the website. 

Cost: $25/day or $100/week for residents; $30/day or $120/week for non-residents.

Vacation Mini-Camps are open for April break (April 22-26). Mini-camps run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offer planned activities indoors and outdoors, in-town field trips, and free-choice projects. 

Waterbury Recreation also offers full-day activities on in-service days in the Harwood Unified Union School District. The next one is March 22. Rec will be open for kiddos from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
