Harwood youth hockey athletes finished up their season recently with the Green Mountain Avalanche Tournament at Jay Peak. 

About halfway through the Highlanders regular season, when asked what things his team had been doing well, varsity boys lacrosse coach Russ Beilke said, “Any time you hold a team under five goals, it is a solid win for the defense!” 

With just hours left to the 2020-21 school year, Harwood Boys Lacrosse suits up for the Division II state championship against undefeated Rice Memorial at South Burlington High School at 6 p.m. tonight.

Defending State Champions, the Harwood Highlanders tried their hand at earning a repeat title for the 2021 season but No. 2 Brattleboro edged them out, ending their season winning streak in the title game on Wednesday that finished as a 5-3 Colonels win.

The defending Division II state champion Harwood Union got its shot at another championship match after its 3-0 shutout semifinal win against Middlebury on the heels of a crushing 8-4 victory against MMU in the quarterfinals.

Third-seeded Harwood Union Girls Hockey hosted sixth-place Middlebury for the quarterfinal round of the Division II State Championship. Ultimately the Tigers went on to clinch the state title this week, defeating South Burlington, 2-1, in the final. Wednesday night was a busy playoff night and Harwood Girls Basketball came up short in a tight matchup against U-32, ending their playoff run ahead of the Division II quarterfinals.

Coming off a state championship in 2020 the Harwood varsity boys hockey program was eager to get their delayed season under way. Two weeks in, they haven’t disappointed on the ice.

Coming off a co-championship win last season, Harwood girls basketball will have a tough time topping their fairy-tale 2020 finish, but head Coach Tom Young sees a strong team with promise to keep the momentum going in the 2021 abbreviated season. 

In his second year as head coach of Harwood Boys Basketball, Josh Bellows owns that the team is building after setting a new path last year that ended 4-16-0. 

In a short season, Harwood gymnastics has had a short competition schedule with just three meets from mid-February to mid-March.

After an exciting double overtime followed by penalty kick rounds in the state playoff quarterfinal match, third-place Harwood Boys Soccer fell to the sixth-seeded Montpelier Solons on Halloween. 

A season started during the COVID-19 pandemic was billed a “season of gratitude” and coaches and players alike across Harwood Union fall sports teams say they were thankful to play during fall 2020. 

Fall high school championship season is well underway and Harwood Girls and Boys Soccer both advance to the quarterfinal matches at home today. 

Although Harwood Athletics does not have its own football program, student-athletes this fall have still had the opportunity to pad up, travel, and play with neighboring U-32’s football program run at the U-32 High School campus in Montpelier.

Four years since the tragic wrong-way crash on Interstate 89 that claimed the lives of five area teens, Harwood Union athletes this past week marked the anniversary to celebrate the lives of Mary Harris and Cyrus Zschau of Moretown; Liam Hale and Janie Cozzi of Fayston, and Eli Brookens, of Waterbury.
