The Harwood Union Field Hockey program has a new coach starting this fall as former Montpelier coach Sophia Tretiak joins the Highlander coaching staff.

Harwood Athletic Director Chris Langevin announced the hire last week naming Tretiak the new head coach for the varsity program.

“Sophia’s development of student-athletes both as young adults and tactically on the field has the athletic department excited to welcome her to our school,” Langevin said. “She is going to bring a new vision, excitement, and passion to the field hockey program, and I’m excited to see where the program goes -- the sky is the limit!”

Sophia comes from Montpelier High School where she coached the Solons for 7 years following a successful stint as a player herself at Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I. “I am so excited to start coaching at Harwood. I’m passionate about field hockey and look forward to getting to know the team,” Tretiak said, “I’m grateful to have this opportunity. This is sure to be a unique season and I’m excited to get started.”

It will be a different experience for Coach Tretiak this fall, as schools are restarting athletics after being shut down since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Highlanders first game was scheduled for Sept. 2 but the state of Vermont pushed all fall sports back to begin practices on Sept. 8 with an updated game schedule still to come.

Harwood ended its 2019 season with a record of 6-7-2, making it to the quarter-finals match in the fall Division II playoffs.
