The Night for Spotted Salamanders
April 26, 2025 | By Shawnee Perry
Editor’s note: The first warm and rainy evening of spring marks Big Night, when native amphibians set out on a mass migration from their underground winter hideaways back to their birthplace, vernal pools and ponds to breed. Local photographer Shawnee Perry caught this spectacle with spotted salamanders and some frogs out and about on such a night recently.

April 19th seemed to be The Night for Spotted Salamanders. In my neck of the woods in Duxbury, anyway! For years, I’ve been venturing down on and around the 19th in the dark of night to watch the salamanders gather in a nearby pond. These salamanders do not need help crossing the road, seeming to literally pop up from the moss and grass of the surrounding area. They’ve chosen their location well, and I’m thankful to observe this amazing spectacle.
Spotted salamanders live most of their lives underground, coming out to meet, reacquaint, and lay their eggs for only a few nights. The science of it all is incredible. North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier has great information for those looking to learn more. Happy Spring, all! ~ Shawnee
