State Treasurer: Hang up & report phone ‘spoofing’ calls

April 1, 2025

To the Community:

The Vermont Treasurer’s Office is aware that several Vermonters have received unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to be U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

The callers asked for personally identifiable information, such as date of birth and address, and financial account information.  The callers then advised that the “Vermont Treasury Department” would be calling and to pick up calls from only one number: (802) 828-2301. While that is the main number for the Treasurer’s Office, we do not ever call members of the public from that number to request financial information.

These scam attempts are “spoofing” our phone number to give false legitimacy to these fraud attempts.  Know that the Treasurer’s Office will never make unsolicited calls to members requesting personally identifiable information. Here are some tips if you receive an unsolicited call from anyone purporting to be from the Treasurer’s Office:

  • Ask for the caller’s name.

  • Ask for a call-back number.

  • Never give out personal information.

  • Hang up if the caller seems suspicious.

  • Call our office: 802-828-2301.

Our office has reported this issue to all relevant authorities. If you receive such a call, you can also report the call to the Vermont Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program, join the National Do Not Call Registry and report unwanted calls to the FTC. More information is online from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
