LETTER: There’s time to put the ERA into effect
December 30, 2024
To the Community:
Did you know the United States does NOT have an Equal Rights Amendment?
Virginia was the last state (the 38th) to ratify the ERA in 2020, which means it should have become the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, yet it hasn’t. Women are the ONLY category that do not have full Constitutional protections. The ERA does not create new laws, it simply ensures existing and new rights are not denied or abridged based on sex.
We have the chance now to get it done once and for all. Give women the same protections under the law as men have. Seems pretty important doesn’t it?
We can pressure President Joe Biden to “publish” it, which means certifying the ERA, making it the 28th amendment. Our Vermont senators signed a letter in November asking President Biden to do this.
There is a strong belief that this is a legal action Biden can take before he leaves office and we lose more rights under Trump. The American Bar Association outlined why this is legal. Read about that here.
What can you do?
Send a message to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris through this link provided by the League of Women Voters.
Send a postcard to President Biden telling him you want him to publish the ERA. Mail to: President Joseph Biden, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20500
Call the White House (after the holiday break but before Jan. 10) at (202) 456-1111 or (202) 456-1414.
