LETTER: Duxbury Selectboard chair update and election decision

Jan. 11, 2022

Hello to all,

I hope this letter finds you well, enjoying life in Duxbury. It is hard to believe that another year has made it through with only the craziest mud season we have had in a long time.  I hope you find all the information presented to you recently helpful in understanding the change for Town Meeting Day from floor voting to Australian ballot.  I encourage you to follow up with me should you have questions.

The 2022 mud season was nuts and put a lot of strain on many of us and the town resources.  I did appreciate the patience many of you showed in the slow recovery process to get our roads right. The crew did get out and do some serious ditching on some of our roads. My hope is that this ditching will make an obvious difference this spring. The crew hopes to do more ditching, after mud season. The more ditching that can be done will help with the Road Improvement Plan.  It  looks as though there will be a full crew starting this spring. This is the first year in about five years that this has happened! Hooray! Brian and Randy have been joined by Eric Austin full time and Ron Kerin will be returning as our seasonal guy.

This year Bridge #7-Mill Street was repaired. The salt shed project has been redesigned and will be getting built this year. The Camel’s Hump Scoping Study has a draft for the Selectboard to review. Garage repairs are done, the Scrabble Hill Slope Stabilization is slated to start and finish this year.  The town is working with a solar company to have some sustainable energy in Duxbury. Any of these things can change with a new Selectboard, however.

I am still seeing a lot of illegal dumping on the sides of our town roads. This makes our town look less appealing to passersby. Take pride in our little town. Keep it clutter-free. Please note that the town pays the costs for removing and disposing of these items! Yes, you are paying to get rid of your neighbor’s trash. We need your help to try and stop these actions. Please pay attention to your surroundings and alert the Highway Foreman if you see any items in our right-of-way.

Town Meeting March 7, 2023, will be different. Drive-through voting only.

You may be wondering why I am writing to you here instead of in the Town Report.  The Selectboard letter will be from the Selectboard as a whole unit. This is just from me.

I am not planning to run for the Selectboard this year. This is my fifth year and I feel this is the time to give someone with a different outlook the opportunity to work toward an even better Duxbury. I have enjoyed so many different board members: Tamatha, Erin, Jerry, Bob, Dan, Kevin, Dick, Dawn, Craig Brian, Mike, Jamie. Each has shown me something different.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to grow in my civic responsibility role and the knowledge that goes with that.

Warmest regards,

Mari Pratt, chair

Duxbury Select Board
