LETTER: Roberta “Bobbi” Rood steps up for HUUSD School Board seat in Waitsfield

Feb 17, 2022

Dear HUUSD Community:

I am running for the HUUSD School Board for a three-year board term representing Waitsfield.

As an introduction I have lived in the area for 48 years. I have two daughters who both went to the Warren School and attended Harwood. I worked as a paraprofessional in both Warren and Waitsfield Schools and as a school counselor in Vermont schools from 1980-2005.  From 1990-1993 I worked as an elementary school counselor in Fayston and Duxbury leaving to accept a full-time K-12 counseling position in Rochester, Vermont. I earned a master’s degree in Social Work from UVM in 2007 and worked as an eldercare clinician for Washington County Mental Health from 2010-2020, providing home visits to older Vermonters throughout Washington County.

Throughout my work career I gained a balanced perspective of Vermont that has given me an appreciation and understanding of the diverse needs of Vermonters from children to older adults. I feel that my experiences will help me as a school director as we address current challenges and work together to develop a vision of our schools while acknowledging and respecting multiple stakeholders. Currently 1:5 Vermonters is age 65 or older and it is a wake-up call to the way that demographics are changing and the need to pay attention to the needs of elders in our communities as well as our students and their families.

We are a thriving school district and each of the superintendent candidates noted the strong staff, supportive community and excellent educational programming offered.  I am a creative thinker and will put this to work on the board as we strive to make decisions about the challenges ahead: factoring in needs to improve facilities economically and efficiently, continuing to create a unified school district that meets the needs of the six towns it serves, coping with the financial and emotional toll of the COVID pandemic and supporting a new-to-us superintendent.

I hope that I will be elected as a school director from Waitsfield and look forward to this opportunity to give back to the community of the HUUSD that has given me so much.
