LETTER: VPA should be a positive example for dismantling racism

Nov. 29, 2021 | By Linda Li

Dear Editor,

On behalf of the National Association of Social Workers – Vermont Chapter’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, I’m writing to express our disappointment with the Vermont Principals Association which failed to address and investigate the racial abuse incident that was reported by the Winooski boys soccer team and Winooski School Superintendent Sean McMannon in October.

It is disheartening to learn that the VPA has not been proactive in addressing racial abuse in Vermont school athletics. Despite there being multiple witnesses and statements from Winooski team players, the principals association continues to ignore racially abusive behaviors. Putting out well-written statements and implementing a few trainings only addresses racism on the surface.

High school athletes are our future. We, the adults, have a responsibility to teach our students and young adults how to respect others. The VPA refused to conduct an independent investigation and didn’t take any action to address the abusive behavior of some Enosburg athletes. At the least, the VPA could have hosted a restorative circle for all athletes involved in the incident. Both schools have social workers on staff. The VPA could have used these professionals to take more anti-racist actions, promoting understanding and healing. But VPA didn’t do anything.

Social workers have a strong ethical code which calls us to challenge social and racial injustice in the communities we serve. The Enosburg-Winooski incident is not isolated. It is happening all over the state. Vermont has work to do regarding racial abuse accountability, especially among Vermont young adults who are our future leaders.

We urge the Vermont Principals Association to take action to set a positive example for other organizations who want to dismantle racism.
