My name is Life LeGeros and I’m running for one of the Duxbury seats on the Harwood Unified Union School District School Board. I have been serving on the board since May 2022 after volunteering to serve in an open seat.

I am the parent of two children in HUUSD schools and I care deeply about the experience of all students in our community. I am a member of the Waterbury Area Anti-Racism Coalition and I try to bring an equity lens to all spheres of my life, including my job as an educator and my role on the school board.

During my relatively brief time on the board so far, we have addressed some important issues. My personal thoughts on the issues that I see as highest priority:

  • Transitioning to a new superintendent – I am impressed with the ambitious goals set by the new superintendent and I am particularly excited by the forthcoming plan to further define academic excellence and design a plan to promote it for all students.

  • Reviewing restraint and seclusion – I appreciate the superintendent’s leadership on this important issue and I support the possibility that the Board will craft policy aligned with the moratorium on prone and supine restraints.

  • Strengthening student representation on the board – I am a strong believer in student voice and leadership and our student representatives have done a great job in bringing student perspectives to the table and expanding the role for the future.

  • Considering communicable diseases and COVID-19 mitigation – I am glad that the Board adopted a new policy on communicable diseases. I am generally disappointed by the minimal guidance on COVID mitigation from the state during an ongoing pandemic driven by a disease with unknown long-term health consequences. I will continue to advocate at the board table for stronger mitigations and more transparency on this issue.

It has been an honor to serve for these past few months. Please consider voting for me if you live in Duxbury. I invite everybody to share their concerns and ideas to help guide the future work of the school board. We have great schools staffed by fantastic educators and I am optimistic that together we can keep improving the opportunities for all of the children in our community.

Thank you,

Life LeGeros
