State police are investigating a crash in Middlesex late Friday morning where a Subaru collided into the Filling Station restaurant on U.S. Route 2.
The 77-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and no one else was hurt in the incident that happened shortly before noon, according to Trooper David Lambert.
He explained that the 2020 Subaru Forester had been parked at Red Hen Bakery across the street from the Filling Station. When the vehicle was leaving Red Hen, it “accelerated quickly, crossing U.S. Route 2 and crashing into the side of the Filling Station,” police reported.
“Drug/alcohol impairment are not suspected to be factors in the crash. There was also no indication of malicious intent,” police said.
Driver Nan Gwin of Randolph, who was wearing a seat belt, had a cast on her foot at the time, police said later in a social media post. Gwin had minor injuries and was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center.
The building sustained moderate damage to one wall and a door, police said.
The restaurant remained open for the rest of the day for take-out orders only. Management put out a message acknowledging the “unfortunate accident” and explained they would be closed for dining-in to assess the situation. “We will keep you posted on tomorrow’s hours of operation for both in person dining and take out. Thanks for understanding!” they said.
The crash remains under investigation.
