Three people including a Waterbury man were killed in a two-car crash on Vermont Route 62 in Berlin on Saturday night, according to the Berlin Police Department.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Rt. 62 with Airport and Fisher roads. Central Vermont Medical Center is at that location.
Both drivers and the only passenger in one of the vehicles were all pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
On Monday, Berlin Police Chief James Pontbriand released the identities of the deceased. Patrick Sherman, 30, of Waterbury was driving one vehicle. Heather Martin, 41, of Barre, was driving the other vehicle; her 19-year-old daughter McKenzie Martin was her passenger.
“The cause of the accident is still under investigation but speed appears to be a factor,” Pontbriand said in an email to Waterbury Roundabout.
The crash and emergency response resulted in Rt. 62 being closed for approximately five hours from shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday until shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday.
The Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting in the investigation into the accident and events leading up to the crash. Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to contact Berlin Police at 802-223-4401.
