Waterbury Backcountry Rescue called for bike trail injury

Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team had its first rescue call of the year on Sunday to assist an injured volunteer doing maintenance on the Perry Hill bike trails.

The call came in just before 3 p.m. and Waterbury Backcountry Rescue responded, heading to the trailhead near Waterbury Ice Center, according to crew chief Brian Lindner.

“The injured volunteer was reported to be about one mile out from the trail entrance,” Lindner says in a press release.

A member of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association trail maintenance team met the rescue crew and reported that he already had a location for and an update on the condition of the injured woman; another volunteer was sent to meet her with extra clothing.

The rescue crew determined that the best approach was to bring the injured woman down to Interstate 89 in the vicinity of mile marker 62. She had suffered a knee injury and was able to slowly work her way down to the highway with assistance. Rescue crew members met her at the interstate and transported her back to the trailhead, Lindner said.

The woman left in a private vehicle not needing an ambulance transport.

The rescue was the Waterbury team’s first call for 2024 and it was completed in under two hours, Lindner reported.

Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team is a unit of Waterbury Ambulance Service.
