BARRE — A Cabot woman is accused of embezzling from a bank in Waterbury.

Alexis Lovely, 24, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Washington County criminal court in Barre to four felony counts of embezzlement.

If convicted, Lovely faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. She was released on her own recognizance.

Trooper John Gildea, of the Vermont State Police, said in his affidavit police were notified in November about a possible embezzlement case. Gildea said an employee at Community Bank in Waterbury reported another employee, identified as Lovely, had taken a large sum of money from the bank over the summer and those at the bank were ready to turn the investigation over to police.

The trooper said a bank employee reported a customer stated a large amount of money was missing from their account after they made a deposit. He said during the bank’s investigation into the matter, Lovely was questioned and admitted to taking funds for her own financial benefit.

Gildea said the bank provided investigators with emails, written statements and bank records for the missing funds. He said included in the statements was Lovely admitting to stealing three deposits that had been made by Kinney Drugs in July.

Gildea said the deposits totaled $14,354.12.

The trooper said Lovely admitted to pocketing money when there was more money in her cash drawer than there should have been, and those at the bank discovered she had duplicated a withdrawal twice, once in July and again in August, taking $4,500 each time.

The trooper said Lovely took a total of $24,784.12 from the bank.

He said after Lovely was caught and admitted to taking the money, she paid back $993 before leaving the bank. He said she later returned $10,050, all in $50 bills.

Gildea said he spoke with Lovely on Dec. 7. He said she reported she had been struggling financially, as she was the sole provider for her household. The trooper said Lovely admitted to taking money, though she was unsure how much.

He said Lovely reported she returned about $11,000, with the understanding those at the bank wouldn’t not go to police about the stolen dollars. Gildea said he informed Lovely that she had actually taken over $24,000 and only returned $11,000.
