Vermont State Police are asking the public for help finding a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 89 during a snow squall last week involving a teenage driver from Waterbury.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, according to a news release issued Tuesday evening.

Troopers responded to the southbound side of I-89 near mile marker 62.2. Trooper Mae Murdock said a 16-year-old driver in a 2016 Honda CR-V was headed south in the right lane when a truck attempted to pass.

There was a snow squall happening at the time with heavy snow and slippery road conditions, police said. The Honda driver told police the truck fishtailed as it passed, striking the front driver’s side of the car.

“This contact resulted in the juvenile operator losing control of the CR-V vehicle and subsequently coming to a position of uncontrolled rest in the southbound lane,” according to police.

The Honda came to a stop facing oncoming traffic, according to the driver.

The driver of the truck failed to stop following the crash, police said. The incident would involve a charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

The driver of the Honda was not injured; the vehicle was totaled.

Anyone with information regarding the involved truck should contact the Vermont State Police Berlin barracks at 802-229-9191 to reach Trooper Murdock, or email Mae.Murdock@vermont.gov. Anonymous tips also can be submitted online at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
