Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District looks to fill board opening
October 27, 2024 | By Waterbury Roundabout Vermont’s 14 Natural Resource Conservation Districts will hold elections in early December to fill board openings. Nominating petitions for candidates interested in district supervisor positions are due by Nov. 8 with at least 25 signatures.
Natural Resources Conservation Districts are local subdivisions of state government established under the state's Soil Conservation Act to coordinate with landowners and municipalities in applying conservation practices to the land. Conservation districts sponsor educational, technical, and financial assistance to address water quality and the conservation of natural resources.

“Conservation districts offer a unique and powerful vehicle for citizens to become involved with local conservation work and establish programs that protect the environment,” according to the election announcement from state Natural Resources Conservation Council Chair Rick Hopkins of East Montpelier.
Waterbury and nearby communities are part of the Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District that covers Chittenden and Washington County as well as the towns of Orange, Williamstown and Washington in Orange County. Its territory enompasses five watersheds: the Winooski River, LaPlatte River, Lamoille River, White River and Lake Champlain Direct. To be placed on the Dec. 9 election ballot for the office of district supervisor, a nominee must have a minimum of 25 signatures on their nominating petition. Anyone residing within a district may run for office of conservation district supervisor. Anyone owning land and residing within a district may sign a nominating petition.
