Weekend events: Storms so far don’t change plans

August 8, 2024 | By Lisa Scagliotti

Update Friday 11:30 a.m.: The Vermont Philharmonic concert on Sunday will be held at Harwood Union HS rather than Moose Meadow Lodge. See below for more information.

The remnants of a hurricane may be headed up the East Coast with heavy rains in store for Vermont Friday into Saturday, but those planning a wide range of weekend events say they are sticking with their plans.

Scheduled “rain or shine” for Friday-Sunday, Aug. 9-11, at Farr’s Field on U.S. Route 2 in Waterbury, the annual event brings together hundreds of antique and classic car owners and fans.

This year marks the 67th meet organized by the Vermont Auto Enthusiasts. It opens at 7 a.m. Friday and ends at 2 p.m. Sunday with a full schedule of events all three days including an auto-focused flea market. (The Waterbury Flea Market is off this weekend and will return next week.)

On Saturday, the car meet will hold its parade from Farr’s Field on U.S. 2 down Main Street to Rusty Parker Memorial Park starting at 3:30 p.m. U.S. 2 will not be closed, but traffic will need to wait for the parade to proceed from the event site to downtown Waterbury.

Immediately following the parade, Stowe Street in downtown Waterbury will be closed in the block between Main Street and the intersection with Union and Railroad streets for a dance party from 7 to 10 p.m.

Sunday: Summer Pops moves to Harwood Union HS

The Vermont Philharmonic plays its first of two Summer Pops concerts this Sunday, Aug. 11, at 4 p.m. and the decision has been made to take advantage of the event’s rain location, Harwood Union High School’s auditorium rather than the outdoor venue at Moose Meadow Lodge in Duxbury. Tickets are still available. Alcohol is not permitted at the school and food is not allowed in the auditorium. Check vermontphilharmonic.com for more information.

The Philharmonic’s second performance is Saturday, Aug. 31, at Shore Acres Inn in North Hero. Read more about the concert program in a July 24 post here.
