Central Vermont’s holiday concert tradition returns Dec. 1 and 3, as the Vermont Philharmonic and Chorus present two concerts at the Barre Opera House.
“Hallelujah! As Vermont enters the holiday season, Handel’s beloved ‘Messiah’ brings warmth, light and joy,” the event announcement declares.
The orchestra and chorus with Conductor Lisa Jablow will present two performances to put audiences in the holiday spirit. The first is Friday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. followed on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m., both at the Barre Opera House.
The concerts will present the entire first part of “Messiah,” with arias and choral numbers that contemplate the idea of a messiah, foretell the coming, and hail the arrival. The performances conclude with the beloved “Hallelujah” chorus from Part II, and six numbers from Part III celebrating redemption.
The Philharmonic and chorus will again use Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s orchestration of the familiar arias and choruses, adding flutes, clarinets, French horns, and trombones to Handel’s orchestra. Audiences will still hear Handel’s beloved melodies. Mozart adds just a bit of color while retaining the essence of Handel’s masterpiece.
Soloists for the concerts include Cristina Escobedo, soprano; Linda Radtke, alto; Adam Hall, tenor; and Mason Jarboe, baritone. Mary Jane Austin is the assistant choral director.
Now in its 65th season, the Vermont Philharmonic has been making beautiful music since 1959. It is Vermont’s oldest community orchestra composed of professional and talented amateur musicians. Lou Kosma celebrates his 25th season as music director.
