Valley Players to hold auditions to cast March play
November 16, 2023 | By Waterbury Roundabout
The Valley Players will hold auditions in early December for the play “Poet’s Choice” by Mary Pratt scheduled to run March 8-17 at the Valley Players Theater in Waitsfield.
The play is the 2023 winner of the Valley Players’ Playwright Award and will be directed by Doug Bergstein.
Auditions will take place on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the theater.
The play asks: What if an angel gave you a choice between a life of happiness or fame and fortune as a result of expressing your art? That is the question facing Margaret, a poet, writer, and English professor. Pem, a fallen angel chosen by God and Satan themselves to settle this wager, comes to earth to find an artist to pose this question to, with admittance to heaven and wings or hell and a flamethrower on the line for Pem.
“One thing I really like about directing a new play is that it’s never been done before so there are no previously conceived notions about what it should look like,” Bergstein said. “It’s exciting for all those involved to create something from scratch.”
Roles for the show include two women aged 25-40 and 35-80; one man aged 30-50, and four people of any gender, any adult age. Starting in early January, rehearsals will take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m., and Sundays 4-7 p.m.
Shows will be Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m., from March 8 to 17.
