The people who run Vermont State Parks are seeking public input as part of a modernization study underway through mid-February.

The study aims to offer a comprehensive assessment of the state park system including park amenities, operations, maintenance, revenue, and program delivery, according to an announcement by the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.

The study also will aim to identify key challenges, along with the resources needed to maintain core services and enhance offerings to meet current and future demands.

“Throughout the years, with considerable public support and prudent management, Vermont State Parks have weathered societal changes and economic challenges of all sorts,” said Nate McKeen, director of Vermont’s state parks. “Now, as we approach the 100th anniversary of Vermont state parks in 2024, and as park visitation continues to increase, this study will help us create a road map for the future of our state parks.”

The survey is online at vtstateparks.com with more information about the process, a section for participants to leave ideas in a number of categories, a forum where participants can exchange comments, and a short questionnaire.

The website will collect input through Feb. 15.

McKeen said state parks enrich the quality of life for Vermonters and visitors while contributing to community prosperity, tourism, and the outdoor recreation economy. “Because of this vital role state parks play in Vermont, we really encourage everyone to share their thoughts and ideas with us as we help to build a better park system for all,” he said.

The state is working with the national parks and recreation consulting firm BerryDunn on the study. The schedule aims to have the study completed by early spring, with a final report issued in May.
