The Stowe Street Alley Project continues to fundraise toward the goal of renovating the alley beside Stowe Street Emporium in downtown Waterbury with one more fundraiser under way for community members to purchase engraved bricks through Feb. 15.

Jack Carter, the original owner of the Stowe Street Emporium, was passionate about transforming the alley and had dreamt about it for over 20 years. A key member of the planning committee, he died unexpectedly in June 2021. Multiple community organizations, including the Waterbury Rotary Club, MakerSphere, Waterbury Arts, Waterbury Masonic Lodge and Revitalizing Waterbury have come together, along with adjacent property owners, businesses and community members to turn this dream into reality.

The alley will be resurfaced this spring, including using the engraved bricks purchased by community members. So far 300 bricks have been purchased with a goal of an additional 200 from the current fundraiser.

Brick orders may be placed through Wednesday, Feb. 15, for $100 each. Three lines of text may be added. Bricks may be purchased online at revitalizingwaterbury.org or fill out a form available at Stowe Street Emporium where check payment will be accepted. Purchases are considered a donation and could be tax-deductible. Donors will receive a certificate recognizing their contribution.

In addition to the brick and surface work, other plans are coming together to add art, benches, planters, etc. to the alley. More information about the project is online at revitalizingwaterbury.org/alleyproject.
