Montpelier pivots to Valentine party - minus the skating

UPDATE to earlier post (below)

Organizers of the Valentine’s Day celebration in downtown Montpelier announced on Monday that plans will pivot due to warm weather likely making ice skating a challenge on Tuesday.

Montpelier Alive! said the party outside at the State House “must go on, but with no skating.” Activities are still on for 4-7 p.m. including snow painting, building blocks, music, free hot cocoa and treats from Dunkin’ and possibly broomball. Maudite Poutine will not be participating, they said.

New Horizons After School program and Let’s Grow Kids have joined in to help with activities as well.

Cautioning that Mother Nature has the final say, Montpelier has plans in the works for a Valentine’s Day all-ages skating party at the State House outdoor ice rink and everyone is invited.

The event – depending on the weather of course – is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

There will be music to skate to, free hot cocoa and treats from Dunkin’ Donuts, and members of the UVM women's hockey team plan to attend. Maudite Poutine also will be there with food for sale.

The Montpelier Recreation Department has a limited supply of skates to borrow on site, otherwise bring your own. (Donations of gently used skates to the supply are welcome, too.)

Sponsors are Dunkin’, Fidium Fiber, and Heney Realtors along with Montpelier Recreation, Montpelier Roxbury Public Schools Partners in Education, and the Washington County Youth Service Bureau.

The Montpelier outdoor skating rink is operated by the city of Montpelier for free open skating any day of the week. For details about winter skating rink events and downtown discounts for participants, visit montpelieralive.com/winter
