Green Up Day is Saturday, May 6
April 28, 2023 | By Waterbury Roundabout
Saturday, May 6, is Vermont Green Up Day and volunteers are needed across the state to pick up litter along roadsides, in neighborhoods, parks, etc.
In Waterbury an online signup has all of the details for getting bags, dropping off what you collect, and letting others know where you plan to work as well as tips for being safe while Green-ing Up.
Bags are available at the town offices and Sunflower Market on Rt. 100.
Drop off filled bags on May 6 at one of two locations: the town highway garage on Guptil Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at Rodney's Rubbish on River Road, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bags should not be left on roadsides as there is no pickup service. If you see stray bags along the road, please grab them to drop off at one of the two collection spots.
Organizers ask volunteers to please try to bag returnable bottles and cans separately if possible. A group is still needed to take the collection of redeemable containers and keep the funds. Without volunteers to take the bottles and cans, they will be included with the trash. If you are interested in taking on that task, contact coordinator Lisa Scagliotti at lscagliotti@comcast.net or 802-373-5878.
Tires
Any tires found doing Green Up are accepted free of charge at the Green Up drop-offs.
There are two options for recycling tires on Green Up Day:
The Green Up drop-offs will accept used car and pickup tires for $5 each (rims OK).
Clyde Whittemore Little League and Boy Scout Troop 701 will collect tires on Green Up Day as a fundraiser at Waterbury Service Center, 49 S. Main St. Drop off unmounted passenger-sized tires from 8 a.m. to 4 pm. for $5 each. All proceeds will benefit the two groups. Pete’s Tire Barn in Williston will handle disposal.

Duxbury Green Up and beyond
The Duxbury Land Trust is organizing Duxbury’s effort for the 26th year. Most main roads, but not all, in town have volunteers planning to work, but some could use extra help such as Stevens Brook and River roads, according to town coordinator Audrey Quackenbush.
Those looking for a spot should check the smaller roads. And if anyone is aware of specific problem areas such as illegal dumps, contact Quackenbush.
In Duxbury, Green Up bags are available in the black mailbox outside the Town Clerk’s office. Dumpsters will be located at the Highway Department, Route 100, on Green Up Day. As in Waterbury, there is no roadside pickup service, so please bring filled bags to the drop off.
Do not bring personal trash including tires to the drop off. (Personal tires can be recycled in Waterbury at Rodney’s or at Waterbury Service Center. See above.)
Organizers remind volunteers that litter pick up in Duxbury along Route 100 will be done by the Agency of Transportation.
