Waterbury brothers receive Eagle Scout rank together
January 19, 2023 | By John Fisher
Two scouts from Waterbury Boy Scout Troop 701 were recently awarded the highest rank of Eagle Scout in an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony held at the American Legion Post 59.
The Jan. 9 ceremony recognized brothers and Eagle Scouts Zach and Ryan Fisher for the work they put into completing the requirements for the distinction in the past couple years. Both have been part of scouting since grade school and Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program.
It was January 2021 when Zach passed his Eagle Board of Review after completion of his Eagle project that involved rehabilitating a nature trail at his alma mater Bishop Marshall School in Morrisville. The project included building benches and bridges, clearing brush and downed trees, and managing a group of volunteers.
Zach joined scouting in 2009 as a Wolf Cub Scout. He’s a 2020 graduate of Rice Memorial High School, where he played volleyball and was a member of the National Honor Society. He’s currently a junior at Stonehill College in Massachusetts studying data science.
Ryan passed his Eagle Board of Review in August 2022 after completing his Eagle project to repaint the kitchen at the Waterbury Senior Center. The project included soliciting donations of supplies, painting, and managing volunteers. Ryan joined scouting in 2011 as a Tiger Cub Scout and he’s currently a senior at Rice Memorial High School where he plays volleyball and is a member of the National Honor Society. He hopes to attend UMass Boston in the fall to study international relations.
The ceremony brought together friends and family of the Eagle Scouts and a few remaining troop members. Over the past several years during the COVID-19 pandemic, Boy Scout Troop 701 has shrunk and is looking to build back its membership.
Scoutmaster Albert Caron said whether the troop can continue will depend on it getting a new influx of members. The troop welcomes youngsters ages 11 and older. They can be brand new to scouting or have previous scouting experience. The troop meets at 7 p.m. on Mondays at Brookside Primary School.
