The latest exhibit at Axel’s Gallery and Frame Shop features the work of Kimberly Hargis, winner of the gallery’s 2022 Photography Shoot-Out contest.

Titled “Close to Home: Photography from a 30-Mile Radius,” the collection encompasses scenes from Hargis’ experience as a photographer living in Thetford, Vermont.

She says that while some may find the concept limiting, she has found it to be the exact opposite. Hargis creates images that reflect her immediate surroundings and sphere of influence. Her muses are often found in the natural world where she tends to spend most of her time behind the lens of a DSLR camera. Balance, symmetry, captivating lines, shadows, and textures are all elements present in her work.

Hargis finds photographic inspiration being surrounded by the rich beauty of the Vermont landscape and its wildlife along with the inhabitants of its close-knit communities.

“She has a special fondness for macro photography and observing life on a smaller scale and is a strong advocate for the preservation and conservation of our natural sacred spaces here in the Green Mountains,” noted gallery owner Whitney Aldrich in announcing the show.

The public is invited to the gallery to meet Hargis at an artist reception planned for Friday, Jan. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Hargis exhibition opened Jan. 4 and will be on view until March.

Axel’s Gallery and Frame Shop is open Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
