Waterbury Recreation looks ahead to spring with March schedule

Waterbury Recreation has new programs starting up as March begins including kids swim lessons at Sugarbush, fitness classes, programs after school and during vacation days and multiple special events.

March 2: Swim Lessons
Sunday afternoon swim lessons begin March 2 at Sugarbush Resort for children ages 6 months to 12 years old. They will cover everything from being comfortable in water to swimming basics and different swim strokes. The program runs four weeks.
Fees: $80 for Waterbury residents; $100 for non-residents.
Location: Sugarbush Health and Recreation Center in Warren.
March 18: Paint by Number
Waterbury Recreation with Watercolors by Joshy for a paint-by-number event to benefit the Recreation Department. Participants will paint their very own Watercolors by Joshy masterpiece, featuring Alf. Artist Joshy Pellerin will help beginner-to-advanced painters with their artwork.
All supplies are provided with the registration fee: $40 per person.
The schedule for this event is: 5-6 p.m. Meet and greet with the artist (free); class is 6-7:30 p.m. requiring registration and the fee.
Location: Steele Community Room at the municipal building, 28 N .Main St.
March 21: Kids Bowling Party
Waterbury Rec plans a special bowling party on this school in-service day! We will travel to the Twin City Family Fun Center in Berlin for a pizza lunch, followed by two hours of bowling. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
Details: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; $45 for residents, $50 for non-residents.

March 22: ‘Irishing’ for a Treasure Hunt
As part of our “Overcoming Cabin Fever” series, this townwide treasure hunt will set out to find gold around town. There will be awards for best-dressed leprechaun, most festive in green, and for the treasure hunt winners at the end of the rainbow in the Steele Room. Treasure hunters will also enjoy a festive baked potato bar at the award ceremony.
Recommended for ages 6 and up and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Details: 3:30–6 p.m. in the Steele Community Room, 28 N. Main Street. Fee is $10 per participant if registere by March 15 and $15 afterward. Sign up here.
March 24: Zumba with Mikayla High
Instructor Mikayla High will lead participants in this high-energy fitness class that’s recommended for ages 16 and up. Another is planned for April 7.
Mikayla has been teaching Zumba, Aqua Zumba, and Zumba Step for 10+ years. She loves the dance party element of Zumba and hopes to bring a smile to your face during each and every class.
Details: 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Building, 27 Butler St. Fee: $15 per participant. Another class is planned for April 7.
Wednesdays & Fridays: Drop-in Fitness Classes
Join Waterbury Rec Program Coordinator Katie Mandych for a strong start to your day with early-morning fitness classes. Bring an exercise mat, water bottle, and a positive attitude.
Participants will be led through a series of bodyweight exercises, with a focus on HIIT-style strength and cardio moves, plenty of good music and positive encouragement. All levels welcome and exercises will be adjusted to meet the needs of participants. Waivers required. Those 14-17 need a parent or guardian signature.
Details: 7:30-8:15 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at the Recreation Building, 27 Butler St. Free with donations appreciated to support summer camp scholarships. More info online here including instructions to text the night before if you plan to attend.
Afterschool, school vacation camps, and in-service days
Waterbury Recreation is a licensed-exempted recreational program for children grades K-6. We focus on a variety of fun, enriching, and engaging activities such as sports, group games, field trips, and more. We are outside as much as the weather allows and have fun indoor activities during poor weather and dark evenings.
The Afterschool program runs from the end of school to 6 p.m. almost every school day, with the exception of closure dates listed on the website. Cost: $30/day or $110/week for residents; $35/day or $130/week for non-residents.

Vacation Mini-Camps are open for April break (4/21-4/25). Mini-camps operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These camps will offer planned activities indoors and outdoors, in-town field trips, and free-choice projects.
