The Vermont Symphony Orchestra soon sets out on its five-stop summer tour that includes performances in Stowe and Shelburne. It also has announced plans for special concerts at Trapp Family Lodge for summer 2024.

The 2023 TD Bank Summer Festival Tour dates are June 30 to July 4. The program features a mix of swing, jazz, spirituals and marches with American favorites by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, George Gershwin, John Philip Sousa, Johnny Mandel and more.

The orchestra will set up on ski slopes, hillsides, and meadows in South Pomfret, East Burke, Stowe, Grafton, and Shelburne under the direction of Conductor Michelle Di Russo. Prolific performer guest trumpeter Ray Vega – also the host of Vermont Public’s Friday Night Jazz program – will perform at each of the shows.

The Stowe performance is July 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Trapp Family Lodge meadow. On July 4, the VSO plays Shelburne Museum at 7:30 p.m. and the show concludes with fireworks. Other dates and venues are South Pomfret on June 30, East Burke on July 1, and Grafton on July 3.

Tickets for Stowe: Adults $35 in advance, $40 at the gate; $10 for ages 6-17; 5 and under are free. Tickets for Shelburne: $28 in advance, $35 at the gate; $5 for ages 6-17; 5 and under are free.

Buy tickets and find more information for each performance including the program and venue-specific details at vso.org/events.

In addition, the VSO may still be in need of volunteers to assist at the various stops on the tour. It relies on volunteers to assist at the venue for the performances and to host musicians in each community. Volunteers receive free tickets for their roles.

Anyone interested in assisting as a venue volunteer should email Amanda at volunteercoordinator@vso.org to inquire. Potential housing volunteers should contact Orchestra Manager Patricia Jancova at patricia@vso.org for details.

June 2024: The Sound of Music in Stowe

Looking ahead to next summer, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra recently announced plans for The Sound of Music in Concert at the Trapp Family Lodge, June 20-22.

“One year from now, the hills will come alive with The Sound of Music: In Concert at Trapp Family Lodge,” the orchestra announced.

The VSO will perform the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical in a collaboration with Lyric Theatre Company and support from The Flynn and Stowe Performing Arts.

The performances will feature both stories and songs with Andrew Crust, music director for the VSO conducting and hosted by Kerstin Anderson, a Vermont native and cast member from the 2015 “Sound of Music” national tour. The event is planned for the 65th anniversary of the musical’s Broadway premiere and it will mark multiple other anniversaries including the VSO (90th), Lyric Theater (50th) and the book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Howard Lindsay and Robert Crouse.

Tickets currently are available only to guests of the lodge with reservations for June 19-23. They will go on sale to the general public in the fall at flynnvt.org. The Flynn Theater in Burlington will be the backup venue in case of inclement weather.
