State police say Waterbury man attacked woman, then violated conditions of release

BARRE — A Waterbury man is accused of attacking a woman and then having contact with that woman in violation of his conditions of release.

Alonzo Dale Kidder, 54, pleaded not guilty on March 25 in Washington County criminal court in Barre to a felony count of first-degree aggravated domestic assault. If convicted, Kidder faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. He was released on conditions.

The charge is a felony because Kidder was previously convicted of first-degree aggravated domestic assault in 2016.

Kidder then pleaded not guilty on March 26 to three misdemeanor counts of violating conditions of release. If convicted on those charges, he faces a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison. He was ordered held on $200 bail and was housed at Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury as of Tuesday evening, April 2.

For the aggravated domestic assault charge, Vermont State Police Trooper John Gildea wrote in an affidavit that a citizen dispute was reported in Waterbury on March 22. Gildea said a woman called police to report Kidder, her romantic partner, had gotten into an argument with her, and he was refusing to leave. The trooper said the woman reported Kidder had slapped her in the face the night prior.

Gildea said he went to the scene, which was a camper parked in the Shaw's supermarket parking lot.

He said the victim reported she called her parents to come pick her up while arguing with Kidder. The trooper said the victim reported Kidder then threatened her by asking her if she wanted to go to the hospital.

Gildea said the victim showed investigators a picture of her face after Kidder hit her. He said the photo showed a red mark on the victim's face.

The victim reported Kidder is fine unless he's drinking, and he had been drinking heavily lately, according to court records.

The trooper said a preliminary breath test showed Kidder had a blood-alcohol level of 0.329%. He said Kidder denied hitting the victim.

For the alleged violations of conditions of release, police said the victim reported on March 25 Kidder had come back to the camper in Waterbury and had contact with her. His conditions of release barred him from having contact with the victim, from going near the camper and from drinking alcohol.

Police said the victim reported Kidder took her to the train station in Waterbury and told her he was taking the camper. The victim reported it appeared Kidder had been drinking, according to court records.

Police said they went to the camper and found Kidder inside. Kidder reportedly stated he knew he wasn't supposed to be at the address and admitted to drinking, according to court records. Police said a preliminary breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.034%. Police said Kidder denied having contact with the victim.
