Stowe Police have released more details in a fatal single-car crash that took place on Stowe Hollow Road last week.
“The investigation has determined the involved vehicle was traveling on Dewey Hill Road, heading toward Stowe Hollow Road at a high rate of speed,” according to a press release Tuesday from Stowe Police.
The 2015 Subaru went through the stop sign at the bottom of Dewey Hill Road where it intersects with Stowe Hollow Road. The car crossed the intersection, hit the metal guardrails, and went over the embankment, striking a tree, police said.
The driver of the vehicle was Joaquin Santiago Cubides Pena, age 18, of Stowe. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.
The passengers in the vehicle were Cristobal Gonzalo Medina Labrana, age 23, and Nicolas Gutierrez, age 21, both from Stowe. They were seriously injured and taken to Copley Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center, Police Chief Donald Hull said.
Police said the accident is still under investigation and investigators are awaiting an autopsy report.
In addition to Stowe Police, Stowe Fire and EMS responded along with Stowe Mountain Rescue, Waterbury Fire Department and Waterbury Ambulance Service, police said.
According to The Stowe Reporter, all three of the individuals in the vehicles were international contract workers at Topnotch Resort. An online fundraiser has been organized by the driver’s sister to assist their family.
