On Wednesday morning just around dawn, the burglar alarm at The Wine Vault in downtown Waterbury went off, alerting police to an intruder in the specialty retail store at the corner of Elm and South Main streets.

State police arrived to find the store’s door had been forced open, according to a press release from Trooper Ryan Riegler.

The incident happened at 5:17 a.m.

Owner Anastasia Kohl said that in addition to the door being broken, cash was taken from the store. “This was a non-drama robbery - they didn’t get much, they didn’t damage much,” she said.

Kohl added that the store does not keep much cash overnight, so it was not a significant loss. She’s since notified neighboring businesses, however, so they will be on alert. Given the time of day, Kohl said it’s possible early risers in the village may have seen or heard something. “It was already light out,” she said. “I had a customer say they drive by at that time of the morning.”

There so far have been no witnesses or camera footage to provide any details about the suspect or suspects, Riegler said.

State police are requesting the public's assistance in identifying the suspect(s) involved, Riegler said. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Middlesex barracks at 229-9191.
