Vermont State Police say a Middlesex man died on a trail in Waterbury Center on Sunday when the snowmobile he was riding on crashed into a tree.

Police responded at 4:20 p.m. to the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) trail near Ring Road. Trooper Ryan Butler in a news release said that the investigation found Richard Emmons, 57, was headed west on a 2004 Bombardier Ski-doo snowmobile when it left the trail and struck a tree.

Although Emmons was wearing a helmet, he sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Members of the Waterbury Fire Department, Waterbury EMS, and Waterbury Water Department assisted state police.

Fire Chief Gary Dillon said others on the trail discovered Emmons some time after the crash. Police ask that if anyone has any information related to this incident to contact troopers at the Middlesex barracks, 229-9191.
