Friends, fans asked to send cards, notes to aid Squier’s COVID-19 recovery

WDEV radio station owner Ken Squier is recuperating from COVID-19 in a nearby rehabilitation facility where he also is receiving a wave of cards and notes and get-well wishes from friends and fans around Vermont.
The station posted on social media this week suggesting that listeners and friends send cards that staff will be sure to deliver to the 85-year-old broadcaster. Station Manager Steve Cormier this week said mail will be a boost given that current restrictions do not allow for visitors where Squier is staying.
Squier on Nov. 12 went on the air to tell listeners of his diagnosis in order to send the message for people to take the virus responsible for the global pandemic seriously. Just over a week later, Squier was hospitalized as his symptoms became more serious.
He was moved to rehab last week after testing negative but weakened by the illness, according to family. “He is still resting, working with physical therapists and chatting with close friends and family on the phone,” a station update shared earlier this week.
That was followed by a request for fans to send a card or note and share a memory of or with Squier, explaining that the simple gesture will be appreciated and help with Squier’s recovery.
Cormier said the hospital and rehab settings are difficult for patients now given the restrictions prohibiting in-person visitors. He pointed out how prior to his illness, Squier came into the radio station most days where he interacted with staff and was a familiar face along Stowe Street in downtown Waterbury.
There’s no specific date for Squier to return home other than when he has regained his strength and doesn’t need the daily treatment provided by the center.
