Digging, planting, singing

Members of the Crossett Brook Middle School fifth-grade chorus planted an Autumn Blaze maple tree on the school campus last week.

This was the 24th year the Waterbury Rotary Club has made a gift of a tree to the school, according to Rotary member John Malter who oversees the Arbor Day effort. Rotary will provide its 28th tree, also a maple, to Thatcher Brook Primary School this week.

The ceremony included delivery of sunflower seeds for school students to kick off planting in anticipation of Rotary's annual Hunt for Sunzilla sunflower contest in the fall. Rotary also will provide a crabapple tree and seeds to Moretown Elementary School.

Students also commemorated the occasion by singing the Vermont state song, "These Green Mountains," in their only live performance this school year. Music teacher Molly Dubois accompanied on ukelele. Photos by Gordon Miller
