Undaunted by the challenges of a socially distanced world, the Harwood Union High School  chapter of the National Honor Society gathered over Zoom to celebrate and induct new members for the 2020-21 year last Saturday.

The ceremony began as chapter advisor Kate Stauss spoke about the significance of NHS and then introduced co-presidents Aliza Jernigan and Gavin Thomsen. The pair welcomed friends and family noting that, “In addition to the strong academic records which established the eligibility for membership, our chapter members are leaders in many student organizations and serve our school and community through many activities.”

Next, Thomsen introduced Harwood Union Co-Principal Laurie Greenberg who discussed the importance of bringing excellence to the entire student body and read very short poem, “Instructions for Living a Life,” by Mary Oliver: “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”

Past ceremonies have often included a musical performance. This year, returning senior NHS member Ellett Merriman created a music video where she sings a cover of “The Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga while clips flash by featuring NHS members including the new inductees taking part in their favorite hobbies such as painting, playing sports, snow and water skiing, reading with dogs, playing piano, cooking, and much more.

Following the video, members spoke of the four pillars of NHS: Eva Hynes reviewed scholarship; Angela Bywaters, service; Charlotte Cook, leadership; and Anda Gulley, character.

Next, each new member was officially inducted individually with remarks written by a returning NHS member.

Finally, Co-Principal Megan Mcdonough read a moving passage about leadership penned by President Theodore Roosevelt who praised those who strive toward achievements and noted how “there is no effort without error and shortcoming.”

This year’s new inductees are: Seniors Carlton Cummisky, Jasper Koliba, Siena Mazer and Ashley Proteau; Juniors Anna Alberghini, Jamie Atchinson, Hana Behn, Allie Brooks, Claudia Derryberry, Jaye Fuller, Maia George, Rachel Goodwin, Tatiana Heintz, Sophie Krotinger, Rubi Murphy, Merry Smith and Ava Thurston.

A recording of the full ceremony can be found here.
