On May 2 in Burlington, the nonprofit Music-COMP organization presents a world premiere concert event featuring 23 new compositions by Vermont students including two students each from Crossett Brook Middle School and Harwood Union High School.

The Opus 37 concert is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Burlington. The performance is free and open to the public.

During the day on May 2, student composers in grades 3-12 and the professional musicians who will perform the concert will meet at the cathedral to rehearse and prepare for the evening performance. The musicians assembled by Music-COMP come from around Vermont including members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, TURNmusic, and others.

On the program for Opus 37 are pieces titled “The Adventure to Never be Told” and “Shadow King” written by Crossett Brook fifth-grader Ari Weigand and eighth-grader Julia Wulff, respectively; Harwood Union senior Molly Caffry and junior Dylan Mauro wrote “Regal Fanfare” and “Cambio de Tango.” While Julia and Molly have had Opus compositions performed before, these are the first pieces for Ari and Dylan to see included in an Opus program. They worked with their music teachers Molly Dubois at Crossett Brook and Chris Rivers at Harwood on the projects.

The concert will be broadcast on a livestream by Lake Champlain Access Television. The link to watch online will be available on the day of the concert at music-comp.org/opus-37. Selected works also will be broadcast on Vermont Public.

Music-COMP is a nonprofit music education organization that nurtures student music composition through online and in-person mentoring, live performances, free composition resources and professional development for music teachers.

It’s led by Executive Director Matt LaRocca, a composer, conductor and music educator and innovator, along with Director of Education Stefanie Weigand, a music educator (formerly at Harwood Union High School as choral director), conductor, musician, and performer. LaRocca is a Duxbury resident and Weigand lives in Waterbury Center.
