Harwood club fundraiser supports girls’ education in Ethiopia, Uganda

March 9, 2023 | By Waterbury Roundabout

Nearly half of all girls around the world have no access to an education. Yet research shows that when a girl is educated, she can help lift her whole community out of poverty.

She's the First, a club at Harwood Union High School, is sponsoring a fundraiser featuring a raffle, trivia games, and baked goods on March 15 at 5:30 p.m. to benefit girls who are the first in their family to graduate from high school in Ethiopia and Uganda.

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the group’s fundraiser will be held in person with the theme Girls Just Wanna Have Fun… and a Good Education.

Raffle prizes include day passes from Sugarbush and Mad River Glen, gift certificates from local restaurants, skis from Vermont North, art from local artists, clothes from Katken and Party Shirt International, jewelry from Baked Beads, books from Bridgeside Books, chocolates from Laughing Moon, and more. Winners do not need to be present.

The club asks the community to support their goal to help make this a world where every girl chooses her own future.

Tickets are $5 each, or five for $20. If you don’t know a club member, contact club advisor Kate Stauss for tickets or more information at kstauss@huusd.org. Enter with a payment by check written to She’s the First Harwood Union. Include your contact information and mail to: HUHS, 458 VT Route 100 Moretown, VT 05660.
