Volunteers working last year's Turkey Drive at the Waterbury Area Food Shelf collected more than 100 turkeys and enough cash donations to cover Thanksgiving food costs, according to Director Dani Kehlmann. For over a decade, the Waterbury Area Food Shelf has provided Thanksgiving turkeys and all the traditional meal fixings to those in our community in need of assistance.  The Waterbury Rotary Club is once again stepping up to help us collect turkeys during our annual turkey drive on Saturday, Nov. 12.

We’ll be accepting frozen turkeys at the Waterbury Area Food Shelf at 57 South Main St. between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Other donations such as monetary gifts, non-perishables, and perishable holiday items such as hams or cheese are welcome and appreciated. You don’t even have to get out of your car to donate -- we will gladly take them through your vehicle window.

If you’re in need of some help with a Thanksgiving meal this year, please stop by or call the food shelf during our open hours in the next two weeks to sign up for a turkey and all the fixings. Then come back during the following times to collect your holiday food:

Monday, Nov. 14,  10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 16,   3 - 5 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 17,   4 - 6 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 18,   10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 21,  10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 22,   4 - 6 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 23,   3 - 5 p.m.

We especially want to thank the Rotary Club for sponsoring the event, the Village Market for storing many of our turkeys in their freezers, and S.T. Paving and Bourne’s Energy for their ongoing support of the event. And of course, thanks to the truly caring and supportive community the town of Waterbury has.

Sara Whitehair is the director of the Waterbury Area Food Shelf.
