VTDigger and WDEV radio host and podcaster David Goodman kicks off the Lamoille Valley Osher spring presentation series with an illustrated talk on The Backcountry Skiing Renaissance.

The Waterbury Center journalist, author and backcountry skiing historian will speak on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Stowe Cinema Triplex, 454 Mountain Road, 1-2 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.

Backcountry skiing is enjoying a remarkable renaissance and is now the fastest-growing part of the ski industry. Today's backcountry skiers are following the ski tracks of skiers in the 1930s on trails built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Goodman, author of “Best Backcountry Skiing in the Northeast,” will show photos of skiing past and present and discuss how skiers today are cutting the first backcountry ski trails in nearly a century and reconnecting with skiing's roots.

Goodman writes regularly for the New York Times, and his work has appeared in the Boston Globe and magazines including Outside, Mother Jones, Ski, Powder and Backcountry.

Goodman is the recipient of the 2023 Paul Robbins Journalism Award from the Vermont Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, and the 2022 Ullr Award from the International Ski History Association.

Membership in Lamoille Valley Osher Lifelong Learning Institute entitles members to attend all Osher events statewide and to receive a discount on institute events hosted by the University of Vermont. Register for this single presentation or for the full series online at learn.uvm.edu/olli/lamoille or call 802-656-8407.
