Jan. 31-Feb. 4: Waterbury Winterfest approaches and brings back popular Game Show

January 5, 2024 | By Waterbury Roundabout

Waterbury’s annual stretch of organized wintertime fun is just around the corner with Winterfest scheduled for Jan. 31 through Feb. 4. And after a three-year hiatus, the popular Winterfest Game Show event is back on the schedule for Friday, Feb. 2, but teams need to sign up soon.

The Game Show was one of the best-attended Winterfest events during its five-year run, 2016-2020. Over the past several years, organizers scaled back Winterfest activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly indoor events.

This year, planners assembling the five-day Winterfest schedule have returned the Game Show to the calendar with a deadline of Jan. 12 for teams of 4-6 players to sign up. They also have devised a lottery system to determine which 12 teams will participate if more register than the format and venue can accommodate.

Here’s how it works: Game Show teams show off their general knowledge by responding to trivia questions, puzzles and riddles in three rounds, finishing with a Final Jeopardy-style final question. The top three teams receive prizes donated by local business sponsors.

The competition will be held at the American Legion Post #59 on Stowe Street starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2.

To balance demand and the limited space at the venue, a lottery has been created. Team registration is open now on the Winterfest website. Submissions will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12. Game Show event leaders will conduct the lottery drawing on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. at Blackback Pub, a Winterfest Silver Sponsor. The lottery drawing will also be live-streamed online on Winterfest’s Facebook page

Organizers also are finalizing the full five-day Winterfest schedule now. This year’s offerings are a mixture of outdoor and indoor events for all ages including Wassailing and broomball, snow soccer, volleyball and bocce, beer and wine tasting, snowshoeing, fat bike demos, bingo, Vermont Candy Land, kids sledding and more.

Now in its 13th year, Waterbury Winterfest is a volunteer-run, nonprofit initiative organizing indoor and outdoor winter recreation events that bring community members and visitors together to beat the mid-winter blues. All proceeds from events and sponsorships go towards scholarships, grants, and support for recreational activities in Waterbury throughout the year.
