Expanded and rebranded last summer, the Waterbury Common Market plans several events this month to share its programs and invite the community to visit and learn about its services to provide food to those in need in the Waterbury area.

In July 2023, the nonprofit Waterbury Area Food Shelf underwent a renaming and an expansion at 57 South Main Street to become the Waterbury Common Market. Since then, the organization has increased its hours, adding evening hours on Tuesdays and it’s expanded offerings and programming.

Upcoming September events are:

  • Garden Harvest Party: Saturday, Sept. 14. From 11 a.m. to noon visitors can tour the market’s educational community garden and enjoy free freshly harvested vegetables, fruits and flowers. Led by a UVM Extension Master Gardener, the garden is situated beside the Waterbury Common Market. The garden has raised planting beds where master gardener volunteers working with the market teach community members how to grow and prepare their own food through gardening workshops, creating educational materials such as signage and handouts, and maintaining the garden. This is free and all ages are welcome.

  • Open House: Wednesday, Sept. 18. From 6 to 7 p.m., market staff and volunteers invite the public to visit the still-new market space with its entry now facing Main Street. This is free and open to all ages.

  • Demo table at The Alchemist Brewery: Thursday, Sept. 26. From 2 to 6 p.m., the market will have a demonstration table at The Alchemist Brewery, 100 Cottage Club Road, Stowe. Visitors to the brewery can learn about the market and its programs and services.

The Waterbury Common Market provides food assistance to food-insecure individuals and families in the Waterbury area. The market is open Mondays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays 5-7 p.m., and Wednesdays, 3-5 p.m. More information online at waterburycast.org/waterbury-area-food-shelf or by calling 802-244-1561.
