The Duxbury Historical Society invites the Duxbury-Moretown-Waterbury community to a pre-Memorial Day service this Saturday at 11 a.m.

The event is the first to be held at the organization’s new headquarters, the South Duxbury Church, on Vermont Route 100, directly across from Harwood Union High School.

The program will begin with a brief history presentation of the South Duxbury Church built in 1855 and recently acquired by the society. The service will include “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America” played by Ken Spencer on the church pump organ. Pastor Sam Newton of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Waterbury will give the Memorial Day message. Willie Docto will close the service by playing “Ashokan Farewell” on violin.

Following the service at the church, guests will be invited to walk across Rt. 100 to the South Duxbury Cemetery to honor veterans at the Veterans Memorial Monument. Pastor Marie MacDougall of the Moretown Methodist Church will lead that program, followed by remarks by Mark Morse. Members of the American Legion Harry Cutting Post #59 in Waterbury will decorate the Veterans Memorial.

All members of the community are invited to join in welcoming the church back into the fabric of the community as the new home of the Duxbury Historical Society.

Direct any questions about the ceremony to Skip Flanders at 802-244-5529.
