The Waterbury Community Band led by director Nick Allen will be playing in town this summer with concerts on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. split between Rusty Parker Memorial Park and the Waterbury Center Green.

Due to the forecast for intense heat this week, the concert series will now begin on Tuesday, June 25, at Rusty Parker Park. The other Tuesday night Waterbury concerts are:

  • July 9, 23 and 30 at the Waterbury Center Green

  • Aug. 13 and 20 at Rusty Parker Park.

The band has several additional performances scheduled at other venues and at special community events around the region. Those dates are:

  • Saturday, June 29, in the Waterbury Not Quite Independence Day parade

  • Saturday, July 20, at the Waterbury Center Community Church

  • Saturday, July 27, at the Barre Heritage Festival

  • Tuesday, Aug. 6, a joint performance with the Morrisville Band at the Stowe Free Library

  • Monday, Sept. 2, in the Northfield Labor Day parade

The Waterbury Community Band is a wind band in the tradition of summer volunteer town bands. According to Wikipedia’s Community Band entry, there were an estimated 10,000 community bands in the United States in 1889; today there are approximately 100 such active bands.

The Waterbury Community Band usually has at least 20 musicians from Waterbury and nearby communities playing marches, patriotic tunes, concert pieces, and music from movies and musicals. The band welcomes anyone who would like to join in to play, especially any band students who would like to keep the chops up (and improve) over the summer. Just show up with your instrument!
